The effects of routing, structure type, insulation, shielding, and grounding on transmission lines are discussed. The way these transmission-line choices will improve or degrade lightning performance is also provided. An additional section discusses several special methods that may be used to improve lightning performance. Finally, a listing and description of the FLASH program is presented.

Guide for Improving the Lightning Performance of Electric Power Overhead Distribution Lines
This guide identifies factors that contribute to lightning-caused faults on overhead distribution lines and suggests improvements to existing and new constructions. This guide is limited to the protection of distribution-line insulation for system voltages 69 kV and below. Equipment protection considerations are covered in IEEE Std C62.22-2009.
Standards approved by the IEEE SA Standards Board that are within the 10-year lifecycle.
No Active Standards
These standards have been replaced with a revised version of the standard, or by a compilation of the original active standard and all its existing amendments, corrigenda, and errata.

IEEE Guide for Improving the Lightning Performance of Electric Power Overhead Distribution Lines
Measures for improving the lightning protection performance of schemes applied to overhead power distribution lines are discussed in this guide.
These standards have been removed from active status through a ballot where the standard is made inactive as a consensus decision of a balloting group.
No Inactive-Withdrawn Standards
These standards are removed from active status through an administrative process for standards that have not undergone a revision process within 10 years.

IEEE Guide for Improving the Lightning Performance of Electric Power Overhead Distribution Lines
Factors that contribute to lightning-caused faults on the line insulation of overhead distribution lines and suggested improvements to existing and new constructions are identified in this guide.
