Information and communication technologies (ICTs) form the backbone of today’s digital economy, with an enormous potential to accelerate progress on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and improve people’s lives in fundamental ways—from providing access to education resources and healthcare, and fostering digital services and inclusion, to making communities more sustainable.

With DER penetration growing globally, IEEE intends to help utilities and other industry partners build a qualified workforce for the future.

Since the recent outbreak of COVID-19, clinical researchers, drug manufacturers, economists, social scientists, and other experts have sought access to data for analytics. Much of the data resides in disparate networks and within organizational boundaries. It takes considerable time and effort to obtain permission to acquire this data, to gain authorization from ethics committees or institutional review boards (IRBs) to use it, and to transfer it across overstressed networks. Most researchers would prefer to spend the precious time consumed by these rather tedious tasks on analysis. A more efficient approach would be to have a directory that says what data is where and what it contains, and then develop analytics to leverage the data in a way that preserves privacy and minimizes latency.

In 2015 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that are to be reached by the year 2030[1]. In essence, these goals are an attempt to resolve the issue of the “Great Divergence”[2] between industrially developed and undeveloped countries. SDG 9, labeled “Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure,” is focused on building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and fostering innovation. Communications systems are the core of a huge industry, thrive on innovation, and are a critical element of the infrastructure of modern societies. So, the clear message is that communications systems must themselves be sustain- able over the long term and are also essential for the realization of the collective SDG. The question is, what stands in the way of realizing these goals?

Switches are Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model Layer 2 devices that are responsible for forwarding frames addressed to other ports by using addresses in the layer 2 header (MAC addresses). The most common switch in the market is the unmanaged switch. These require little or no configuration as they learn where to forward traffic by building a table based on the traffic entering the switch. Unmanaged switches are not only a security risk in automotive, they lack features necessary in today’s evolving automotive architectures.

When Microchip introduced the industry’s first AEC-Q100 qualified Ethernet PHY in 2008, we did not know it would herald the transformation of in-vehicle networks to include Ethernet backbones. In part, this was driven by the concept of zonal architectures. Traditionally a vehicle’s Engine Control Units (ECUs) were distributed to the domain they were controlling. There could be a lighting control unit, a door control unit, a powertrain ECU etc. With zonal architectures, the network can be organized to have zones related to a position in the vehicle rather than a function. Each zone then has a connection to many different domains. The choice of zone and connectivity is now up to the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to optimize.

Ethernet as the well-established technology for new and future vehicles is still challenging because of the complexity of testing. Based on the architecture and multiple protocols involved (7-layers of the OSI-model) – engineers are challenged with different test methodologies like Physical layer testing, protocol conformance testing or device- and network performance testing. Security implementations and the careful validation of the functionality with cybersecurity testing reduces the risk of attacks and manipulations.

New automotive applications, such as high-powered entertainment systems, are driving up bandwidth requirements and costs associated with cabling and network interfaces. Automotive Ethernet was designed to meet industry needs and enables fast and cost-effective data communications between systems and in-vehicle components.

The fundamental idea behind global standards collaboration is that standardization needs to work seamlessly across borders and organizations in order to succeed. Of course, seamless standardization requires information exchanges among engineers and entities in countries and regions with different geopolitical view- points. Contrary to this spirit are some recent events that tend to impede the movement of technological information related to standards development across borders even when the information is already public or is destined for public release. One wonders: Are we seeing the rise of information mercantilism?

Autonomous vehicles come with a large number of sensors, multiple LIDARs, RADARs, and high-resolution cameras. It features an array of technologies such as CAN FD, Automotive Ethernet, 10GBASE-T (IEEE 802.3an™), etc. They are capable of generating a massive amount of data in a short amount of time. When you want to record the vehicle data from the autonomous cars to test and verify, it is desirable to record everything that autonomous vehicles can produce at high speed. How can you possibly record that much data? Even if you find a device with high-bandwidth logging and a high storage capacity, how do you offload and analyze terabytes of data? Not only does it take forever to offload terabytes of collected data, but it will be very hard to store that data on a computer.

10BASE-T1S, also called 10SPE (10 Mbps Single Pair Ethernet), is a new network technology currently under specification of IEEE 802.3cg™. The objective of the technology is to get a collision free, deterministic transmission on a multi-drop network, which can be used in applications using CAN, CAN-FD, FlexRay or 100BASE-T1 today.
