IEEE SA Publishes Policymakers Guide to IEEE Standards

Seven examples of how the public sector benefits from IEEE standards

The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE SA) has published its Policymakers’ Guide to IEEE Standards, which aims to help public policymakers better understand the benefits of using IEEE standards to support public policy initiatives.

IEEE standards can be powerful instruments for government. They are global in nature and developed in an inclusive and transparent manner, leveraging the expertise of the global IEEE community from more than 160 countries from all continents.

The Policymakers’ Guide provides an overview of the relationship of IEEE standards and policy, including how they can be used to support the implementation of public policy, including through legislative action and regulations. IEEE standards also provide support outside of these formal processes by creating incentive systems to follow internationally accepted practices by fostering competition, support international trade and enhance productivity.

In addition, the Guide includes real world examples of how governmental bodies around the world have leveraged IEEE standards, including in Canada, Denmark, the European Union, India and the United States.

The IEEE SA invites policymakers to participate in the IEEE Government Engagement Program on Standards (GEPS), where they will have an opportunity to help shape IEEE standards-related programs and services, inform the direction of standardization, and share views with technology experts globally.
