IEEE Std 1588™ sdoId
IEEE 1588 is a protocol for synchronizing the clocks of devices in a network environment. PTP Nodes are devices supporting IEEE 1588. Each PTP Node is permitted to support multiple PTP Instances of the protocol, with each PTP Instance participating in a different set, known as a domain, of PTP Instances. The timing topology and timescale of domains may differ.
A PTP Profile customizes the IEEE 1588 Protocol for a particular type of application. See IEEE Std 1588-2019, subclause 20.3.
The sdoId (Standards Development Organization Identifier) is a protocol attribute, per IEEE Std 1588, that identifies the PTP Profile in use by the PTP Instance; see IEEE Std 1588-2019 subclause 16.5, 7.1.1, 7.1.2, and 7.1.3. The sdoId does not distinguish among different installations using the same PTP Profile; i.e., two different installations using the same PTP Profile will use the same value of sdoId.
Qualified standards development organizations (QSDOs) wishing to provide the capability of isolating instances operating under a PTP Profile created by the QSDO may apply to the IEEE Registration Authority for a sdoId. Only a single sdoId value will be assigned to a given QSDO. A QSDO that creates several PTP Profiles must specify additional requirements to provide isolation between their several profiles, e.g. by specifying additional restrictions on the domainNumber space.
A QSDO is:
- a recognized standards organization with standards activity relevant to an industry; e.g., the IEC, IEEE, IETF, ITU, etc., or
- an industry trade association or a regulatory, government, or other similar organization that has developed standards for an industry provided that:
- the organization’s membership consists of individuals or representatives from multiple companies or from academic or government entities that are active within the industry addressed by the organization. The process of developing PTP Profiles by the organization must be an open process that does not exclude viewpoints of any member from consideration.
- the PTP Profiles developed by the organization must be approved by that organization either:
- by a vote of the membership according to the organizations by-laws if such exist, else
- based on the normal operation procedures agreed upon by the organization.
