IEEE Co-Sponsoring Inaugural 2017 Wearables & Medical Interoperability (WAMI) Workshop

IEEE Co-Sponsoring Inaugural 2017 Wearables & Medical Interoperability (WAMI) Workshop

Event aims to advance wearable, wireless sensor interoperability for healthcare; exploring data collection, privacy and governance issues and building consensus for research, guidance and standardization efforts

PISCATAWAY, NEW JERSEY, USA, 08 September 2017 – IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, and the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE SA), today announced its participation as a co-sponsor of the first annual Wearables & Medical Interoperability (WAMI) Workshop to be held Friday, 22 September 2017 from 8:00 am–6:00 pm EDT in the Coastal Ballroom, Talley Student Union, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina. Additional workshop co-sponsors include the IEEE Sensors Council, the Wireless Research Center of North Carolina (WRNC), and the National Science Foundation (NSF) Nanosystems Engineering Research Center for Advanced Self-Powered Systems of Integrated Sensors and Technologies (ASSIST).

“ASSIST’s commitment to leading research and innovation in low power sensor systems extends from conception all the way to commercialization,” said Casey Boutwell, director, ASSIST Industry Connections. “Our partnership with IEEE on WAMI is a great example of how a community can work together to drive innovation towards adoption.”

The keynote address will be from Michael Dillhyon, founder of healthbank, a Geneva-based health data exchange cooperative in operation since 2013. He is also a co-founder/board member in several other innovative Heathtech initiatives, as well as currently serving as the Chief Commercial Officer of Santio, a first-of-its-kind med device platform focused on fluid management. Mr. Dillhyon will explore trends, challenges and the promise of wearable sensor data and the IoT in Healthcare.

The WAMI daylong agenda includes three panel discussions with open Q&A sessions for participants. Topics include:

  • Shifting the Health Paradigm Through Wearable Nanotechnologies
  • Sensors, Systems & Data: Bridging the Interoperability Gap
  • Defining & Designing for the Digital Citizen: The Promise of Seamless Interoperability

“The expanding IoT, and ever-increasing adoption of wearable devices for monitoring health, is creating a lot of opportunity to enhance patient care, but also shedding light on the need for standardization to avoid interoperability pitfalls and advance the technology in line with prioritizing overall human wellness,” said Michael Dillhyon. “It’s rewarding to see an esteemed group of organizations supporting these efforts through the sponsorship of WAMI, as we work together to help build tomorrow’s healthcare systems and leverage new technologies to maximum benefit for all.”

WAMI will explore a wide variety of technologies, applications and topic areas, including current standardization efforts, such as the IEEE 11073 family of Personal Health Data (PHD) Standards. Other subject areas will include exploration of issues related to blockchain, digital identity, future cities, and more, with the goal of soliciting input for a white paper to further discussion and consensus building on defining industry needs.

Stakeholders in wearable and wireless technology related to healthcare are encouraged to take advantage of this unique networking opportunity and are invited to register for the WAMI Workshop.
